On September 20th, participants of the European Association “World-Our Home” took part in an event organized as part of the project “SURVIVE: Stories of Women and Children’s Resilience in World War II”. During the city walks in Wrocław and Będzin, we explored the stories of female forced laborers in Germany, as well as mothers and children who lived in Poland during World War II. The stories were horrifying and dramatic, putting into perspective the current events that are happening elsewhere in Europe and the whole world, questioning whether the war can ever be excused.
The second part of the event took place in the city of Będzin. A town that, until World War II, had a vibrant Jewish community. During another walk, we followed the stories of Jewish and Polish families during the Second World War and the Holocaust. During the walk, people read excerpts from testimonies, memoirs, and diaries that bear witness to the tragic experiences of many families placed in extreme, inhuman circumstances.
Although the stories and memories experienced during the events were dark and heavy, hearing them is important for us, giving a voice to the lost, keeping the memories of the events that we need to learn from.
Project is funded by the CERV programme of European Union. Coorinating organisation is YouNet from Italy. Partner organizations: UniTBv (Romania) , World-Our Home (Latvia)
